GURUGRAM — After a nearly five-year wait, local athletes and swimming enthusiasts in Gurugram are set to receive a major infrastructure boost. The construction of the city’s first government-operated, all-weather heated swimming pool at Kamla Nehru Park has reached approximately 80% completion, with officials targeting a handover to the Haryana Sports Department by December 2026.
The ₹12.5-crore project originally commenced in 2020 following the demolition of the old municipal facility. However, execution faced prolonged delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent operational bottlenecks. Civil works, finishing touches, and technical installations have now entered their final phase.

Impact on Local Athletes and Sports Ecosystem
Historically, Gurugram swimmers were forced to halt training during winter months or rely on expensive private academies and facilities in Delhi. The high costs proved prohibitive for many promising athletes, particularly those from economically weaker sections. By offering affordable, year-round access to Olympic-grade infrastructure, municipal authorities aim to eliminate regional reliance on outside facilities and democratize access to elite coaching.
Furthermore, the all-weather setup will enable Gurugram to host state- and national-level competitions, specialized coaching camps, and continuous athletic development programs.
Project Timeline and Official Statements
Speaking on the progress, Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) Executive Engineer Sandeep confirmed that remaining civil and technical tasks are moving as scheduled:
"The remaining civil and technical works are progressing as per schedule. Our target is to complete the project and hand it over to the sports department by Dec so athletes can start using the facility this winter. The pool will become operational only after the heating system and other technical installations are fully tested."
If testing completes smoothly on schedule, formal training programs will commence in early 2027.
