'Make Every Effort to Save Fuel': Govt Reiterates PM Modi’s Appeal, Assures No Crisis in India

Make every effort to save fuel

Nexus News Alert | New Delhi, May 11, 2026 — The Government of India has strongly reiterated Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal to citizens to make every effort to save fuel amid rising global oil prices triggered by the Middle East conflict. At an inter-ministerial meeting on Monday, officials assured that there is no fuel crisis in the country and that supplies remain fully secure.

The government’s renewed push comes as international crude oil prices continue to climb due to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. PM Modi had earlier urged people to reduce consumption of petrol and diesel, opt for public transport, carpooling, and increase the use of electric vehicles.

Govt Reiterates Make Every Effort to Save Fuel Appeal

Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, addressed concerns during the meeting and directly conveyed the Prime Minister’s message. She said, “Wherever possible, utilise the Metro and public transportation; opt for carpooling; prioritise railways as a mode of transportation for goods; and wherever feasible, increase the usage of electric vehicles. Let us all come together and make every effort to save fuel.”

The government emphasised that refineries are operating at optimum capacity and there are no reports of shortages at retail outlets or LPG distributorships.

Current Fuel Situation in India

Despite global oil price volatility, retail prices of petrol and diesel have remained unchanged for nearly two years at ₹94.77 per litre and ₹87.67 per litre respectively. The government has so far absorbed the rising international prices to protect consumers.

Why the Government is Urging Fuel Conservation

The ongoing conflict in West Asia has pushed Brent crude above $104 per barrel. India, being a major importer of crude oil, is feeling the pressure on its import bill. By appealing to citizens to make every effort to save fuel, the government aims to reduce the economic burden and conserve foreign exchange reserves.

Officials also clarified that India does not pay any tax for passage through the Strait of Hormuz, addressing concerns about additional costs.

Oil Marketing Companies Under Pressure

Public sector oil marketing companies (OMCs) — Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum, and Hindustan Petroleum — are reportedly facing combined under-recoveries of ₹1,600–1,700 crore per day. Despite this, the government has not announced any immediate relief package for the companies.

Public Response and Expected Impact

The appeal to make every effort to save fuel has received mixed reactions. While many citizens appreciate the call for collective responsibility, transport operators and daily commuters have expressed practical difficulties in immediately shifting to public transport or EVs.

Experts believe that even a 10-15% reduction in fuel consumption through public awareness can significantly help ease pressure on the exchequer.

Government’s Assurance

The Centre has assured citizens that all necessary steps have been taken to maintain uninterrupted fuel supply. Refineries are running at full capacity and strategic petroleum reserves are adequate.

Make every effort to save fuel — this message from the Prime Minister and the government is not just about immediate crisis management but also about building a long-term culture of energy conservation in India.

Nexus News Alert will continue to monitor the fuel situation, global oil prices, and government measures. Citizens are advised to follow official advisories and contribute towards national energy security.
