NEW DELHI — Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla has resubmitted his resignation to step down from all party posts and revoke his primary membership. He is formally pressing the party leadership to accept his exit after an earlier request was put on hold.

Poonawalla had initially submitted his unconditional resignation on July 30 the first time, citing pressing financial and personal obligations. While the BJP leadership initially declined to accept his departure and asked him to reconsider, Poonawalla issued a follow-up letter confirming that his decision remains final.
"Please read this letter in continuation with my last letter dated 30th of July 2026, where I offered to resign unconditionally from all positions and primary membership of the BJP due to pressing financial and personal circumstances. It was extremely touching and I am indeed grateful that the party refused to accept my resignation letter immediately and requested me to reconsider the decision. But after long and hard contemplation, I have arrived at a final decision that I would like to press for relieving me from my role as National Spokesperson and active primary membership of the BJP," Poonawalla wrote in his letter.
In his talks with the party high command, Poonawalla expressed heartfelt gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the party leadership, and the broader organizational apparatus for their mentorship and trust. Reflecting on his political trajectory, he noted that the platform given to a non-dynast leader from the Pasmanda Muslim background reflected the party’s commitment to self-made workers.

Addressing his future plans, Poonawalla indicated a move to the private sector to manage personal and financial priorities, while emphasizing that his ideological alignment remains steadfast. Clarifying his stance, he maintained that he was "leaving the Vyavastha (organization), not the Vyakti (leader) or Vichar (ideology)."
A visible face on prime-time television debates and digital media campaigns, Poonawalla joined the BJP after parting ways with the Congress party in late 2017.
